Customised 3D map: Swiss Alps

🗻 Personalised map of the beautiful Swiss Alps (Jungfrau – Aletsch region)

The Jungfrau (German for ‘Virgin’ or ‘Maiden’) is the highest peak (4,158 m) in the mountain range of the same name. The other two peaks are the Eiger (‘Ogre’) with its famous north face and the Mönch (‘Monk’) with a height of 4,099 metres. South of the Jungfrau is the Great Aletsch Glacier, which, with a length of almost 24 km and an area of 118 km², is the largest and longest in the Alps and Europe.

The Jungfrau rises to the north of the canton of Valais and to the south of the canton of Bern, in the Bernese Oberland region, dominating the Grindelwald valley.

Its summit was first reached in 1811 by the Meyer brothers, Johann Rudolf and Hieronymus from Aarau, as well as by the hunters Alois Volker and Joseph Bortis. At the time, access was difficult, but today there is a rack railway, the Jungfraubahn, which runs inside the mountain to the Jungfraujoch station at 3,454 m, the highest in Europe. From there, you can take a lift another 118 m up to the Sphinx research centre and panoramic terrace, the highest building on the European continent (at an altitude of 3,571 m above sea level). It is visited by thousands of tourists who enjoy the perfect views all year round.

The Jungfrau is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site ‘Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn’, which was established on 13 December 2001.
